The Nancy Conard Kerley story is a bit of a local legend in Haywood County. She was accused and prosecuted of the murder of her own grandchild.

They say she took the small girl up on a mountain and put her in a cave. Then put large rocks in the cave's opening so she couldn't escape. The girl's body was found weeks later.

Nancy claims she gave her away to a man, after her Mother and Step-father didn't want her. She didn't know who the man was. But she may have been telling the truth, some say it took two or three men to move the rocks. And Nancy was an old lady who only weighed 90 pounds.
