Isobel/Isobell/"Nancy" is the daughter of Robert Colvin(e) and Margaret Cuthbertson (married 8 Dec 1724 in Campbeltown, AKA Culbertson). She was baptized on 19 Apr 1730 in Campbeltown, so she was born BEFORE this date. In March 1755, Isobell married John Dunlop in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland (New Register House, in Edinburgh).

Her pedigree: Per the Old Parochial Registers to 1855: Her father, Robert, is the son of William Colvin and Janet/Jenat/Jennet Armour or Armor of Tradigal, Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland, who married there 14 Mar 1695 (Church of Scotland's Campbeltown, Argyllshire Parish Registers, 1659-1855). William is the son of Robert Colvin/Colvill and Elizabeth Wallace of Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland (married 20 Sep 1660 in Ochiltree, Ayr). Jenat Armor's parents are Alexander Armour and Margaret Thomson (all from New Register House). I suspect that spelling/writing was not all that popular to the working class, as the name varies in records.

Isobell's younger brother Robert Colvin was christened on 27 Aug 1733 in Campbeltown to Robert Colvin and Margaret Cuthbertson. Sister, Janet Colvin was christened in Mar 1738 in same. Sister Margaret Colvin was christened in 1743 in same. Plus a "David or Robert" was christened on 18 Oct 1748 in same.

Isobel Colvin married John Dunlop (with an "O") in March 1755 in Campbeltown, Argyleshire, Scotland. Family records reveal she went by the name Nancy but I have yet to find any document with this name, excluding histories based on family given data. Down the line, I see Nancy, Isobel and even Colvin used as given names, in the VA Dunlap clan.

Together, John and Isobel/Nancy had about 9 known Dunlop children that were baptized or born on these dates in Campbeltown:
    Margaret, 25 Jan 1756 - ?
John, bef 25 Jun 1758 - abt. 1838 in Augusta Co.*
    James, 18 Aug 1760 - ? in TN/KY
    Jane "Jenat," 17 Dec 1762 - ? (Mr. Miller)
    ROBERT, 3 Mar 1765 Below
    Elizabeth, 6 Feb 1767 - ?
    Agnes, 13 Mar 1769 - ?
Archibald, 12 May 1771 - 1855 in Middlebrook, Augusta Co.
(The parents names and location, are listed with each name and date of the above children (New Register House).

Daughter Nancy Dunlap (Mrs. Danl Faulkner), 4 Aug 1759 - 4 Feb 1833, connected below, is NOT on the Campbeltown list, nor could I find her in Scottish records. She named kids after her parents and siblings as was customary (Scottish naming patterns): "John, Jas, Isabella, Elizabeth, Agnes, and Margaret." That's the best proof to date. ( I found the christening of an Agnes Dunlop on 5 Aug 1759 in Campbeltown, Scotland, daughter of Wm Dunlop and Jean Watson. Also Agnes Dunlop, christened 19 Aug 1759 in Dreghorn, Ayr, just east of Campbeltown. Agnes is a nickname for Nancy. John and Isobel “Nancy” Dunlop had 7 children christened in Campbeltown from 1756 to 1771, including an Agnes in Mar 1769.) However, her old grave marker says Daughter of Nancy and “John” Dunlap. It's interesting this family also believed her name was Nancy, like mine did.

Visiting New Register House in Edinburgh, Scotland, I ordered copies of above, plus an extract of an entry in an Old Parochial Register, receipt #017579, dated 23 June 1992 from the Register of Proclamation of Banns and Marriages, in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland in March 1755, John Dunlop (with an "o") married Isobell Colvin. Also there were records mentioned above and others not listed here.

Some records there reveal, not Colvin, but Colville or Colvil with the same family. Robert Colville, baptized 7 Jul 1796 of Tradigal, Argyle, Scotland. This may have to do with the lack of reading and writing skills among the common folk.

I note a coincidence with the Colvin and Colville surnames used on Rootsweb by Jamie Colville in Nottingham, England in Jun 1999. This family was in Northern Ireland. The Colvilles are believed to be French Huguenots.

Today in Campbeltown, there are still lots of Colvilles and 1 Colvin found in the UK Whitepages online. I did not see any Cuthbertsons or Culbertson. Anyone interested in some letter writing or calling to find some living kin there?

*Son and bachelor, John, Jr. born 1758 was said to have "lived with brother Robert until he was 80," so he died in about 1838, in VA. (Waddell)
