Transcription from stone in North Palestine Cemetery, Benton County, Oregon: ESTEB, Nancy Ellen, Row 10, Wife of Charles A. Esteb, 20 Aug 1863~ 26 May 1895 - ↑ Cemetery Description
The North Palestine Cemetery is located in the northern part of Benton County on Palestine Road. From Corvallis drive East on Highway 20 toward Albany, to the intersection with Independence Road and turn left. Follow that road for 3.4 miles to Palestine Road and turn right. It is just 1.2 miles further to the cemetery, which is on the north side of the road and is enclosed by a metal fence. Adjacent to the cemetery on the west is the former North Palestine Baptist Church. A sign clearly marks it as "The North Palestine Memorial Church". The windows are covered with tall shutters, each of which has a metal letter "N" or "P" on it. The earliest marked burial in this cemetery , 1879, is that of Martha, wife of John J. SCRAFFORD. The second oldest marked burial, 1881, is that of Smiley CARTER of Illinois who immigrated to Oregon in 1846. Some of the stones in this cemetery were 'signed' by the stone carvers--HARRIS & GILLET, and M. N. KECK, Albany. In 1884, several years after construction of the North Palestine Baptist Church, Tolbert CARTER and Drury R. HODGES deeded land to the church for use as a cemetery. In May of that same year, trustees were selected. In December 1889 the plat of the cemetery was signed and filed with the county by the trustees: J. A. BAILY, D. N. . WILLIAMSON, and John MAYBERRY. In 1933 a plat of the "First Addition to North Palestine Cemetery" was filed with Benton County and signed by the trustees: J. A. CARTER, J. A. BAILY, and W. S. TOMLINSON. Today the Cemetery Association also owns the church which is used for community purposes.
