About Nancy Brown

Nancy Brown was born abt. 1772, likely in Frederick County, Virginia, a daughter of Abraham Brown and his supposed wife Mary Bradford [according to family tradition]. Nancy appears to have married Ammery Day abt. 1789 in Hampshire County, [West] Virginia. They had three children together: Larkin Day [b. abt. 1790], John Day [born perhaps abt. 1795] and William Day [born 1801]. A record of their supposed marriage has not been located, but it is assumed they were married as they had three sons together.

Hampshire County [West} Virginia records show that prior to Nov. 1798, Nancy had apparently left and/or divorced Ammery Day and was living "in adultery" with Thomas Henderson of Hampshire County, [West] Virginia who died 1818 in Hampshire County.

Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia); Volume 1 - Minute Book Abstracts 1788-1802, Section III, 1798-1799:
19 Nov 1798 - Thomas Henderson for living in adultery with Nancy Day.

Thomas Henderson named all three sons of Nancy Brown's prior relationship with Ammery Day, calling each of them "my son" and "son of Nancy Day" and leaving them substantial portions of his estate. He also named his "son" Larkin Day to be the Executor of his Last Will and Testament. Perhaps the most curious thing about the will of Thomas Henderson is that the father of Nancy's children, Ammery Day [spelled "Amray" in the will], was one of the witnesses of his will, along with Adam Brown and David Brown, siblngs of Nancy Brown. Thomas's will was written 6 November 1815 and does NOT name Nancy [Brown] Day/Henderson, indicating that she may have died sometime prior to the writing of his will.

The following record in 1817 [likely after Nancy Day had died, establishes that Ammery Day was the father of son, William Day, born in 1801 [and likely the father of all of her children]:

1817: Amrey Day appointed guardian for his son, Wm. Day, whereupon he gave bond, the said William having made choise of said Amsey [Amery]. [Source: Hampshire Co. Minute Book, Vol. 2, p. 24, 19 Aug. 1817]
