The following excerpt comes from: Portrait and Biographical Album of Barry and Eaton Counties, Mich, pages 633-634:

"Samuel Shaw was born December 8, 1798, in the Old Dominion [Virginia], and was just entering his 'teens' when he accompanied his parents to Ohio. There he grew to manhood and married Nancy Anderson, who was born in Kentucky May 4, 1798. Her parents, Elijah and Marian Anderson, were natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively and were of the Baptist faith.

In the fall of 1831 Samuel Shaw and his wife came with a party of more than a score of men and women to Cass County, Mich., making the journey with teams according to the primitive fashion. The Shaws settled on forty acres of land in Galena Township and there Mrs. Shaw died August 13, 1847."

Because this information on Nancy Anderson is second hand her parentage is not quite certain. So here are some compelling reasons to think we have it right:

The Miriam Anderson who is almost certainly Nancy's mother has a brother named LeGrand Anderson, who settles in Van Buren County, Michigan. He marries Catherine Shaw, probably a sister of Nancy's husband, Samuel Shaw. Samuel and Catherine both end up living and dying in Decatur, Van Buren, Michigan--not far from Cass County. LeGrand was 18 years younger than his sister Miriam, so he must have been more like a cousin than an uncle to Nancy; there was only 3 years difference in age. Finally, Nancy's son John Anderson Shaw names one of his sons Arthur LeGrand Shaw. This seems strong circumstantial evidence that all of these people are closely related.
