As told by Wavie Watkins in a letter dated 11 Dec 1989: About September 1909 two sisters came into our farm community of Boon,Michigan, to find a place to preach the gospel. My father, Charles, being Director of the School Board at that time, brought them to ourdoor to get permission to use the one room school house 1/2 mile fromour home. I was 4 years old at the time and some of the impressionsmade upon my mind at that time are still with me. Perhaps it was thetwo strange women at our door and perhaps it was the agrument that followed between my parents after thesister workers left. My mother leaned strongly toward the PlymouthBrethern who did not believe in women preachers. They started gospelmeetings soon after. These sisters were Emma Lawrence who was not ayoung girl but had professed in Jack Carrol's meetings in Michgan lessthan a year before. Her companion was a young girl from Ontario,Canada, Lizzie Knapp. There must have been three weeks of meetings. My father went the first night on thru till the meetings closed. He was quite impressed at first and urged my motherto go with him and after one week she remembers how my father told herthey sang a song, "Be in Time" and he was afraid that she would not bein time. That seemed to have stirred her to go and she was soimpressed by the first meeting that she never missed another. Themeetings closed leaving my mother rejoicing in having found God's onetrue way. She had tried other churches before but was disappointedand never continued the search. The place where we lived was a long way from any friends or meetings and there were noautomobiles. She had four small children. I was four, my sisterAlwilda who spent nearly 60 years in the work and died in Austriawhere she had been preaching several years, was five at the time truthcame to us. Lawrence and Louise were 2 years old. Jane was born in1915. Lloyd was twelve years old.
