Myrtle grew up at 2711 S. 8th St. until about 1907 age 15. The family moved to NE Mpls. close to Pop factory. She probably went through the 8th grade and possibly helped in the family business. She met Cliff at about age 23 and dated about a year before their marriage. Clifford wanted a large family as he was an only child but Myrtle had difficulty getting pregrant until she had surgery where it was found that she had only one ovary and some correction surgery allowed her to become pg in Feb. 1918. Her brother, Ed, died in March 1918 as a WWI soldier in Des Moines Iowa. Arl was born in the back bedroom of the four-plex with an attending physician (Dr. Jos Strattle), Myrtle was age 28. There was a serious flu epidemic at the time and home birth was safer than the hospital. Cliff was a traveling salesman with McLeod & Smith at the time. In Aug. 1921, she is pregrant with Vonnie when her dad, John Duresen died Nov. 20, 1921. At age 33 she has Dick, age 36, she has Betty and age 38 she has Cliff.
The Peterson’s bought their Eagle Lake cabin in about 1924. The family starts spending time at the lake in a small rustic cabin. Myrtle loved staying at the cabin during the entire summer with the kids out of school and Cliff would drive up on weekends. She was a busy mother of five children and quite young with Cliff died at age 59. Myrtle was always looking for her dream house. She lived on Clinton most of her married life (29 years). After Cliff died in 1952, Mrt, Dick and Cliff jr. moved to an apartment at 3510 2nd Ave. So. The lived here until Her house was built in St. Anthony Village in October 1959. She only lived here for about 3 months before she suffered a heart attack at home and died in the ER at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 69.
Mrytle Elizabeth was born Marie Johana Duresen. Her name was later changed to legally reflect the name she used.
She enjoyed music and piano.
She had difficulty getting pregrant at first. She had some female surgery and it was found that she had only one ovary and one falopian tube. This operation allowed her to now conceive and three years after their marriage, they had their first chid, Arleigh.
Mrytle & Cliff bought their Eagle Lake Cabin in about 1924. Mrytle spend all her summers at the lake from then until her death in 1959.
