Moses King was among the first settlers of Great Barrington (originally part of Sheffield) "south of the bridge." He was a resident of Great Barrington at the time of his marriage. He was one of the original settlers in Sheffield, in the 5th division of the Lower Township. Title there was confirmed in 1733-34. [Taylor, p. 103]

There were both free blacks and black slaves in the Berkshires from the earliest days; Sophia Green was purchased for 20 pounds by Moses King from David Ingersoll in 1741. [Taylor, p. 134]
