It was here where he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in combat action, including his voluntarily and single-handedly taking out an enemy pillbox which had pinned down and inflicted heavy casualties on his unit. It was also here that he received his first Purple Heart for wounds he sustained during the capture of Palermo."
