He was married in May, 1860, to Mrs. Miranda C. Martin nee Cole, a native of Virginia, by whom he had two children: Mary C., wife of William P. Tate, and Tillie A. Mrs. Paxton also had one child by her first husband: Louisa E., wife of Thadeus J. Chrisman.
