Facts and Events
The ninth of Nathan and Nancy's ten children was Miles Murphey Canaday, born in Henry County in 1851. He left the country life of his father's farm and moved to New Castle where he became a banker. On May 10, 1883, he married Sarah Helena Schmidt. Grandfather Schmidt was an idealist who had come to America after attempts at a democratic revolution in Germany had failed in 1848. The 1900 census records Miles M. Canaday living on Court Street in New Castle with his wife and four sons: Ward Murphey; Miron Smith; Frank Harrison; and Wilbur Dare Canaday. Miles Murphey Canaday himself prospered. He could afford the finest schools for his sons. Miron graduated from the Cornell School of Engineering after spending three years at Purdue. Wilbur, Frank and Ward all attended Harvard University. (Taken from Henry County Historicalog, Spring, 2001) References
