Michael O'Brien inherited the family business in Mullagh, but discontinued the bakery business. He inherited a farm from his uncle, Michael O'Brien of Killernan, and also bought some land in Carhuligane, Mullagh. He married Nora Sexton of Moyglass House, on 21st of June 1944 and they had eight children. In 1955, after the birth of her last child, Nora had a melanoma removed from her leg, which eventually resulted in her death from cancer in May 1956. Michael was heartbroken, but was fortunate that his sister Margaret took over the role of mother and housekeeper and they reared seven of the eight children; the youngest child, Bernadette was reared by her aunt Susan O'Brien in Miltown Malby.
