Information on Michael Neese

From Rootsweb Post:

I think MICHAEL NEESE, son of ADAM and ELIZABETH (HARPINE) NEESE, married to REBECCA PENCE on 13 Dec 1819. WHY? Because Michael's mother, Eliza beth (Harpine) Nehs married GEORGE MOURA (sic. Mowery or Mowrer), after her first husband, ADAM NEAS, died ca. 1799-1800. Ref: p. 370, P. & C. Harpine; p. 114: Zirkle Family; pp. 300 & 351, Shen. Co. Mar. Bonds, 1772-18 50, by Vogt & Kethly. On p. 161 of Shen. Co. Mar. Bonds is an entry: "NEES, Michael and Rebecca Pence, 13 Dec 1819; b. Geo Mowery." Reasoning: What would be more natural than for Michael's stepfather, since the age of about 8, to be his bondsman for his marriage? If he was NOT the stepfather of this Michael, then why in the world would he have been his bondsman?

Michael and Rebecca migrated between 1830 and 1840 to Terre Haute, Mad Riv er Twp., Champaign Co., Ohio (per U.S. Census). They are buried there in Terre Haute Cemetery; I have seen and photographed the tombstones: -"Michael Neese -Died Mar. 19, 1875, Aged 80 Yr 11 Mo 19 Days." -"Rebecca, Wife of Michael Neese, Born Shenandoah Co., VA, Sep. 13, 1802. Died July 30, 1873."

On the tombstone of Michael (3) Neese is inscribed, "Michael Neese - Di ed Mar. 19, 1875, Aged 80yr 11mo 19days." Using the date calculator this translates into a birth date of 31 Mar 1794. I prefer to use this date as all others found appear to be unsubstantiated.

There were TWO Michael Neeses in Shen Co. who were cousins and contemporaries. One m. Elizabeth Zirkle; he was b. 4/23/1796 and d. 1852 in Shen. This is evident from his TOMBSTONE, which I have personally seen near New Market, VA. I believe that Rev. Jacob William Harpine, author and family historian of era 1950s- 65, got his info from this tombstone. The OTHER Michael Neese m. Rebecca Pence, 13 Dec 1819, and they died at Terre Haute, Cham. Co., OH, he on "19 Mar 1875, Aged 80 Yr 11 Mo 19 Days". [This from his tombstone, which I have viewed in Terre Haute Cemetery. (These dates calculate to 29 Mar 1794 for a birth date.) George Mowery (Moury, etc.) was the second husband of Michael's (m. R. Pence) mother, Elizabeth (Harpine) Nehs. My Michael Neese (b. 1794) likewise fits very nicely, date wise, with his siblings, and with the dates of parents' marriage and father's (Adam) death.

From my list of sources, here are some extracts: 1. The marriage bonds book states: "Nees, Michael & Rebecca Pence 13 Dec 1819; b. Geo Mowery". Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds, 1772-185 0, by Vogt & Kethley, 1984. [Book 7, p. 181, Shen. Marriage Bonds.] 2. Philip Harpine and Catherine and Their Descendants, by Rev. Jacob William Harpine, 1952: p. 370, et seq.: "Chapter VI: Elizabeth Harpine and Adam Neuse and George Mowrer "Elizabeth Harpine (2) b. Sept. 17, 1763; d. [blank] mar. Adam Neuse; mar. George Mowrer. She was born near Moores Store, Shenandoah county, Virginia. Adam Nease's father, Michael Nease, Jr., was the son of Michael Nehs who landed at Philadelphia, PA, from Rotterdam on Sept. 11, 1731 [at age 1] with his sister, Magdalene Nehs, age 7 yrs, his brother, Hans Jacob Nehs, 5 yrs, and his sister, Katherine Nehs, age 2 yr s. Later [they] located in Shen. Valley near Forestville, VA. The name is sometimes spelled Nehs, Neas, Neese and Nease.

"In Deed book K, page 278 at Woodstock, VA, you will find a recorded deed made from Michael Nease, Jr, to his son Adam Nease deeding 210 acres . .. on Mill Creek for 500 pounds current money of VA. Date ... June 13, 1796. "Adam Nease died in 1799 or 1800. [Actually, according to the regist er in Solomon's Church, Adam died 1 Dec 1797.] According to Will Book G, pages 146 to 148 at Woodstock ... Jacob Steigel was executor of Adam Nease's estate and guardian for Michael Nease. George Mowrer was guardian for John Nease. Jacob Zerfas was guardian for Dolly Nease. ... "On January 29, 1801 Elizabeth Harpine Nease, the widow, married George Mowrer. Likely no children by second marriage. The name Mowrer is sometimes spelled- Maura, Maurer and Mowery. "I. Dorothy Nease (3) b. April 16, 1791; d. June 7, 1853; mar. Jacob Bowers ... March 27, 1813. ... "II. John Nease (3) son of Elizabeth Harpine and Adam Nease born about 1793; mar. Elizabeth Painter ... married March 10 1816. Nothing more known of them. "III. Michael Nease (3) son of Elizabeth Harpine and Adam Nease born [and here begins what I think is totally in error!] April 23. 1796; d. April 25, 1852; mar. Elizabeth Zirkle [1799-1855] ... They are buried in the Nease-Zirkle cemetery near Forestville, VA." [In a later volume, Re v. Harpine places them as, "Buried in the Zirkle cemetery two miles west of New Market near Manors Mill."] [NOTES: Some extraneous material omitted as " ...
