Moore, Michael - entered service 1777 in Berkeley County, Virginia, in 12th Virginia Regiment; granted Pension 1818 in Bath County, Kentucky*; resided there 1820 age 60, occupation farmer, when he had wife age 53, daughter Louisa age 15 & son Sila age 13**; surname also spelled Moor; query letter in file in 1903 from great granddaughter Mrs. Elizabeth R. Jackson, Silver City, New Mexico. F-S36165, R1757.

  • Note: corrected to Bath County, Kentucky from Bath County, Virginia - likely a transcription error.
    • - other records show that son Sila[s] was abt. age 13 in 1820, born in 1807.

    Michael Moor [sic] States that he was a Continental Soldier or a Soldier in the Continental Army in the service of the United Colonies in the time of the Revolutionary war – that he was enlisted the first time in Berkley [Berkeley] County State of Virginia on the 25th day of February in the year 1777 for three years that he served out his time and that he was discharged at Philadelphia on the 4th day of February 1780 by [indecipherable word]1 Febeger [Christian Febiger] and that he served two other Towers [tours] in the Militia three months each that he then enlisted under Captain Lebart for during the war and that he served until peace was made that he was discharged at little York Pennsylvania and that he has lost his discharge. That he is a citizen of the United States that he lives in Bath County State of Kentucky that he has never received or been allowed any pension from the United States or from any State in the union: that he is old people & infirm that he is possessed of a family consisting of a wife and three small Children that he is possessed of a very small property which property is wholly inadequate to the support of himself and family that owing to his age lameness and infirmities he feels himself unable for labor he states that from his Judgment circumstances he is induced to make application to the Government for aid, the subjoined Certificates of Discharge marked A B & C the only evidence now in his power of his said Services and Discharges.
    Elijah Perry states that he is a near neighbor and intimately acquainted with the above named Michael Moor who is now in his presence and that the above statements made by the said Moore as to his situation and circumstances are substantially true.

    State of Kentucky Bath Circuit: Sct.
    Ordered that it be certified to the Secretary at War that the preceding examination of
    Michael Moore and Elijah Perry was taken on oath in Open Court and that it does appear to the Satisfaction of this court by said Examination that the said applicant Michael Moore was during the Revolution War and enlisted soldier and that he served as such as in said examination is stated and that he said Michael Moore is in such needy & indigent circumstances as to require the aid of his Country provided by the Act of Congress in such cases provided. The foregoing statements sworn to in Open Court in due form of law.
    In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix the seal of my office this 17th day of June 1818 and in the 27th year of the Commonwealth.

    These are to Certify that Michael Moore Formerly a Soldier in the 8th Virginia Regiment has duly and faithfully served the Term of three years for which he was enlisted, in consequence of which and at his own request he is hereby Discharged from any further Service in the Army of the United States and permitted to return to his home free and unmolested – he having received all his Bounty, pay & clothing & Deficiencies of pay and Clothing in full of all allowances & provision made by the Congress for their Troops. His receipt for which is on the back hereof.

    State of Kentucky Bath County Sct. December court 1820
    Michael Moore produced and made oath to his Schedule and statement as a United States
    pensioner which was examined by the Court and ordered to be certified as follows to wit. On
    this 11th day of December 1820 Personally appeared before the Honorable the Justices of the
    Bath County court in open Court the same being a Court of Record Michael Moore aged 60
    years and being duly sworn according to law doth upon his oath declare that he served in the
    Revolutionary war as follows to wit in the 12th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel
    Grayson and in Captain Joseph Mitchell's company and that his pension list bears No. 9036 and that he was a Citizen resident in the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that he has not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of his property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring himself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that he has not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to him nor has he any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by him subscribed $..Cts

    and the said Michael Moore further declares on oath as above that his family consist of a wife aged about fifty-three years, one daughter named Louisa Moore aged about 15 years one son named Sila Moore aged 3 years and holiday more an orphan child aged 11 years that he is by profession a farmer and that he is unable to pursue the same in such manner as to procure a
    living for himself and family being lame in his legs which lameness originated as he supposes from cold and renders him too decrepit to walk in pursuit of his profession and that his wife is lame in one of her hips which renders her almost unable to walk and that she as well as himself are frequently confined to their beds that he owes and debts due by notes outstanding the sum of $28 that he has no debts due him that he is living on a parcel of land supposed to contain about twenty-seven acres a portion of which land is unfit for cultivation and that he has no legal title to it and it is doubtful whether he can procure one but if he should he supposes the land will be worth about two hundred dollars.
