Michael Helmantoler (1947-present) visited the Fredrick Evangelical Reformed church and handled the record book and confirms that the name Michael Helmedal as the spelling of the parent. The "d" is a soft "t" and the german accents varied in the area. The place Manakess is probably Monocacy which was a "hundred" militia district subdivision of Fredrick County Maryland. There is a lost community of Monocacy near Creagerstown, Maryland near the upper part of the Monocacy river. There was also a Monocacy Plantation that was near the town of Walkersville nortwest of the town of Fredrick. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~quakers/monocacy.htm

I doubt the Johan Andoni Hellenthal link to Michael Helmandollar. Your Michael spelled his name in 1761 on the Fredrick, MD. Church records as Helmantel. This means "bight colored cloak". The name goes back to Bavaria and the living ones are in the Netherlands. There is a version of the name spelled Huellmantel in which the "u" means an umlaut.

I don't find any immigration records on either name.

I am also trying to find 2 Hellmenthals that came to the USA as Prussian soldiers in 1777. Try searching around on these names.
