Michael Grindstaff of Jessamine County in the state of Kentucky who was a Corporal in the regiment commanded by Colonel Armstrong in North Carolina line for the term of 1 year. Transcribed on the roll of Kentucky,at the rate of 8 dollars per month, to commence on the 24th of September 1819. Certificate of Pension issued 5th of June 1820 and sent to Benjamin Mills, Lexington, Kentucky. Arrives to 4th month of March 1820 42.89 semi-anl all'ce ending Sept 1820 48.00 7/30-4/31 (5 months)
total 90.89 Revoluntary claim Act 18 March 1818 Sate of Kentucky Sct On the 24th of September 1819 before me one of the judges of the circuit court of the state aforesaid personally appears, Michael Grindstaff, aged six-five years, resident in Jessamine county and same State, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of congress entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revoluntionary War". That he the said Michael Grindstaff enlisted in the summer or fall of 1781 being the few months before the Battle of the Eutan Springs in the company commanded by captain Alexander Brevard of the 2nd Battalion of the North Carolina regular regiment of the line on continental enlistment--Having been enlisted in Lincoln County in said State, to serve for twelve months--Colonel Dickson commanded the regiment and Major Little and Armstrong were also in it. That he continued to serve in said regiment until 10th of June after the battle of the Eutan Springs, being twelve months service, then he being discharged for service at Campden, in South Carolina by Colonel Dickson, he was in the battle of Guildford, the Eutan Springs at the seize of ninety six, in Fort Thompson and South Cake--And that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in mind of the assistance of his Country for su pport and that he has more other evidence now in his power of his said service except the accompanying--Having had his discharge destroyed by getting it wet, falling into pieces--His captain he understands was still alive in North Carolina in Muhlenburg County, two years ago, perhaps still is.
Michael (M) Grindstaff Sworn to and declared before me the day and year aforesaid. B Mills Fayette Circuit Sct I do state on oath that I am well acquanted with a man named Michael Grindstaff. I know that he enlisted and served for twelve months or more in the Revoluntary War as stated by him as I know of his going unto service and coming out again--and I have seen his discharge papers since he came out of the service--Witness my hand this 24th day of September 1819 Jacob (X) Grindstaff Sworn to before me--date above
B Mills I, Benjamin Mills judge as aforesaid, do certify that it appears to my satisfaction that the said Michael Grindstaff did serve in the Revoluntionary War for at least nine months against the common enemy as states in the preceeding declaration, and that he is such reduced circumstances as to stand in need of the assistance of his Country for support. And I now transmit the proceedings and testimony taken and had before me to the Secretary of Department of War--Persuant to the directions of the aforemention act of Congress September 24th 1819
B Mills State of Kentucky, Fayette County Sct 25th September 1819 I, Thomas Bodley clerk of the court for the circuit aforesaid do hereby certify that Benjamin Mills whose name is subscribed to the foregoing certificate is and was at the time of subscribing the same the presiding judge of the Court for the circuit aforesaid duly commissioned and appointed agreeable to all and of all whose official acts as such due faith and credit is and ought to be given. Thomas Bodley C J C C I certify that the aforesaid witness Grindstaff is respectable and creditable--this statement is worthy of belief B Mills State of North Carolina, Secretary's Office 27th May 1820 I, William Hill, secretary of State in and for state aforesaid do hereby certify that it appears from the Muster rolls of the Continental line of this State, that Michael Grindstaff a Corpl in Captain Brevard's Company of the 10th regiment mustered in 1781 and left his service the 7th of June 1782. It is believed he served twelve months. Given under my hand to the date above Wm Hill State of Kentucky, Fayette Circuit June term 1820 Be it remembered that Michael Grindstaff made affidavit in open court and delivered a schedule of his property amounting to one hundred and twenty three dollars agreeable to an act of Congress passed the first day of May 1820, concerning pensioners which is ordered to be entered into record. District of Kentucky SS Fayette Circuit On the 24th day of June 1820, personally appeared in open court, being a court of record for the said district of Kentucky and circuit of Fayette County, Michael Grindstaff aged sixty some years, resident in Jessamine County in said district, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, declare that he served in the Revoluntary War as follows: He enlisted under Captain Alexander Brevard of the second Battalion of the North Carolina line, under command of Cole: Dixson and General Greene at Salisbury, North Carolina the spring before the battle of Eutan Springs don't recollect the year of serve for twelve months--was at the battle of the seize of Ninety-six, Fort Thompson and discharge at the expiration of his time in Camden, South Carolina by Colo Dixon; and I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1878 and that I have not serve time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof, with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revoluntionary War" passed 18th of March 1818, and that I have nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contacts, or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule here unto annexed and by me subscribed: Two head of horse worth $ 50 two cents and calves worth $ 30-- ten heads of hogs and pigs worth $ 9--five head of sheep $ 5--some poultry $ 2--no land, Kitchen furniture $ 6--one bed and furniture and house--hold furniture $ 30--$ 123.00 James Eastin owes me 41 dollars--one note for $ 3--I owe Isaac Hayes about 50 dollars my occupation is farming in a very small way on rented land, my wife aged about fifty years is all my family.
