Michael left Ireland in 1867 at the age of sixteen and came to Harrisville for work in the lumber industry. the 1870 census show Michael and his brother, John, living at a boardinghouse and working at the sawmill.

Michael and John Dyer were native Gaelic speakers and could read, write and speak English. From 1871-1873 Michael and his brother worked in Clam Lake, Michigan, apparently following the Harris brothers who had relocated their lumber business to that area. From 1873-1905 Michael and Mary raised their family in the Harrisville area. Sometime during the 1880's, as the lumber business was folding, Michael took up farming.

Mary Dyer, her younger children and her brother Lorenzo LaChapelle, left Harrisville for Detroit the year after Michael died. Mary operated a roominghouse on Milwaukee Avenue East and later lived in a duplex on McGraw Avenue.
