Origin of Coughlin name: Grandson of Couchlan (Dim; of Cochal, a hooded cloak) Coughlin, as I am researching, is most prevelant in County Cork and County Offaly in Ireland.

From the book " A Genealogica History of the Milesian Families Families of Ireland by B.W. DeCourcy, dated 1830: Coughlin,Caughlin,Coghlan,Coughlan,and Coughlen are all derived from the ancient name McCoghlan, McCoghlan means "Warrior" and the County that they were in possession of was )ffaly (Kings) County. McCoglan were from the DAL CAIS TRIBE , FOUNDER CAS, son of Olliol Ollum, first absolute King of Munster, A.D. 177 PEDIGREE The blood of both Heber and Heremon, the sons of Milesius is united in this noble tribe as here shown: 1. Cathal was the founder of the family of McCoghlan. The correct way of pronouncing Coughlin is Cocklin, the English tend to prononce it Cofflin which is entirely incorrect. I have heard the name pronounced as Coglin in parts of Ireland.

Some Coughlin's were changed to Conklin when coming to the US, (probably because the immigration official - or census takers - mistook the Cochlin sound for Conklin!)

There are no listings for Coughlin in the 1850 Census, so the family probably immigrated from Ireland between 1850 and 1860. Declarations of Intent, Dubuque Co, Iowa Persons That Emigrated from Ireland Book 1 1834-1856

Although the age info is 5 years older than later census data, the date of declaration would be consistent with the time when Bridget would have arrived several years later.

The 1860 Census lists his age as 35. Iowa, Dubuque, Microfilm roll 320 Book 1, Page 369. The family listing is Michael Coughlin (35y), Bridget (30y), Mary (4y) b. in NY, Margaret (2y) b. IA. The census was taken in June, and Jennie was born in October.

The Dubuque, IA Census data for 1870 and 1880 contains several interesting items for what appears to be the same family. The spelling of the surname in 1870 is "Coughlin" , in 1875 it is "Conklin".The microfilm index for the 1880 IA Census spells the name "Conklen", but a review of the actual census page shows that to be in error.) The birthdates and places for Michael, Bridget, and daughter Margaret are the same. The oldest daughter, Mary, is the daughter of Thomas Conklin and the stepchild of Michael.

The daughter "Hannah J." in 1870 is "Jennie" in 1880. And the youngest daughter "Bridget" in 1870 is "Agnes" in 1880.

The records of births in Dubuque start at 1880, checked the marriage and death records at the courthouse, found nothing. The only census record was the one you have, ward 1, page 123. The only listing I found was in the city directory, 1875-1876, Michael Conklin, laborer, residence Southern Avenue 1877, M. Conklin, laborer, residence 610 Southern avenue 1878-1879, Miss Maggie Conklin, dressmaker, residence 628 Southern Avenue

There is an IA State Census for 1885 and 1895. A search of these would be meaningful.

1895 Census film numbers for Dubuque is 1020346,...347,...348; for Linn its 1022073,...74.

An interesting record continues in the Cedar Rapids City, Linn County, IA 1900 Census: Roll 444, Book 1, Page 8A

It lists Daniel V. Sweeny (b. Aug 1853 in MA whose parents were born in Ireland) married to Margaret (b. 1860(?) in IA whose parents were born in Ireland). They were married in 1882. Living with them is her father, Michael Coughlon(sp?). He is a widower who was born in Ireland in 1838, and became a naturalized citizen in 1870. His occupation is a church janitor. The marriage date would be about right. especially with Margaret (Maggie) having been in Cedar Rapids for the 1880 Census. The birthdate for Michael is 1838, which is earlier than previous records. This is the only questionable area.

The Sweeny's have four children: Jennie C. (b. March 1888), Olliver C. (b. May 1892), Mary E. (b.Dec 1891), an a son (identity difficult)(b.June 1886).

The 1910 Census (Roll 411, book 1, page 81b) lists Margaret Sweeney as a widow who had been married 28 years, so her husband was deceased within the past year. Her father, Michael Coughlin (spelled properly), at age 70 was still living with her. He indicated he had been married 50 years previos, and immigrated to the US in 1848.Three of the children are there, with Jennie not listed. The spelling for "Mary" is now "Marie". I believe Marie Sweeney was Jennie's niece who came to Steger and married into the Gansen family. (See Gansen records)

Two types of wills are included in this index: Prowills and Codewills. Prowills refer to probate packets, which contain information about the decedent’s heirs and property distribution. Codewills are wills that were filed at the Scott County Courthouse for safekeeping, but were never probated.
