Facts and Events
1. Came to western Pennsylvania about 1814, settled in Pittsburgh. on Coal Hill. [This area, now known as Mount Washington, is on the bluff across the river from downtown Pittsburgh.] About 1816, he moved up-river to area which later became Oakmont. He purchsed 234 acres there, and built a log house. [Different sources give different sizes of his land purchase. The original Elliott tract was surveyed at 394 acres, but it is not known if Michael bought the entire tract.] Later he built a small brick residence, which still stands at 101 Pennsylvania Ave., Oakmont. The family cemetery is on 4th St., between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Peter took over the farm at Michael's death. |
