"Michael Bowles b. abt 1780, Ireland came to Canada before 1851 (in 1851 Whitby census as labourer at age 71, also a widower) (in 1871 census of Reach twp., as labourer at age 91, living with son Joseph).

...Michael Bowles stated his religion to be Church of England but his sons, Robert, Michael and Joseph were Roman Catholic (even before their marriages), so likely Michael's wife was Catholic and his sons were baptized Catholic in Ireland."
