Pioneer Wman Dies, 89; Born in Covered Wagon

Mrs. Melissa J. Buckman, 89 years old, an Illinois pioneer in her own right, died yesterday at her home, 1034 Linden avenue, Wilmette. She was the widow of Royal M. Buckman, insurance man, and one of those who adjusted the losses in the Chicago fire of 1871. Mrs. Buckman is survived by six children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was born near Portland, Ill., in Whiteside county, on Jan. 15, 1845, as her parents were pushing into Illinois by ox train on their long journey from Scotland. Her father was a Methodist circuit rider between Sterling and Joliet. Mrs. Buckman often told her own children how, when she was a girl, the Indians used to come to their log house near Prophetstown to barter or to steal.
Mrs. Buckman removed to Chicago in 1874 and became active in the early days of Chicago's club life. She was a member also of the women's club of Wilmette, where she lived for 36 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel at 1118 Greenleaf avenue, Wilmette, with burial at Rosehill cemetery.
