May was born in 1910,the youngest child of Frank and Ida (Kelder,Smitter) Vanderwal. She had two older sisters Elsie Vanderwal Molhoek and Hattie Vanderwal Cox. She left home and became a nurse, doing her early training at Cadillac Mercy Hospital and then going to Grand Rapids. She finally ended up in Detroit, where she was the head nurse for General Motors Corporation on Grand Blvd., in Detroit, Michigan for 30 years. After her retirement she moved to California for the warmer weather. She traveled to every country in world, except on the African Continent.

She is buried next to her sister Hattie and her parents Ida and Frank Vanderwal
