Hattie Vanderwal Cox wss the daughter of Frank and Ida Vanderwal. She grew up in the Falmouth, Michigan area where she taught school right after county normal.

She married and had one daughter Doris Jeanne Cox Lucas. After receiving her BA in Education from Western Michigan in 1951, she and her daughter moved to Berkley, Michigan where Hattie taught for the next 25 years, retiring out of the Berkley, Michigan school system.

In 1976, after a valiant fight against cancer, she passed away. She is buried next to her mother and father and sister May Vanderwal in the Vogel Center Cemetery.
