About Max Schwartz
Max Schwartz was born in 1890/91 in Trochenbrod, Ukraine (then the Russian Empire). His birthdate has been variously recorded in different records as either 14 July 1890 [Declaration of Intention in 1911 and Petition for Naturalization in 1914], 10 January 1890 [Social Security Death Index], or 10 January 1891 [California Death Index]. The birthdate of 14 July 1890 is likely more accurate as that date is stated on the two Naturalization records that were both signed by Max, and it includes the name of his wife, Sarah, as well as the name and birthdate of his daughter Mollie [Mildred], who was born August 9, 1911 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Max also stated in his Petition for Naturalization that he arrived in America on the ship S.S. Merion, which sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia and arrived on 16 June 1906. His occupation was then listed as a "Presser", which was a person whose occupation was pressing or ironing clothes in a laundry or dry-cleaning establishment. This agrees with his occupation as stated in the 1910 U.S. Census, which lists Max's occupation as an "Presser" in a factory. Max was then listed as a "Boarder" living with the family of Samuel Bolden, his wife Sophie and their family. Max's [future first] wife Sarah Lipshutz was listed in the 1910 Census as an "Operator" making "Coats", so it is possible that Max Schwartz and his wife may have met working together in the same trade or industry.
By 1920, Max Schwartz had become the "Keeper of a Grocery Store", which according to family history was a corner grocery store in Philadelphia. His two sons, Abraham [age 4] and Benjamin [age 2] were then too young to have worked in the family business. Max's wife Sarah died sometime between January 1920 [likely in Philadelphia, PA], when she was listed in the 1920 U.S. Census, and before 22 December 1922, when Max had re-married to his second wife Frieda Kramer in Los Angeles, California. In 1930, Max [age 39] again was listed as the "Proprietor of a Grocery Store" in the U.S. Census, living with his [2nd] wife Frieda [age 42] and his children Mildred "Molly" [age 18], Abraham [age 15] and Benjamin [age 13].
In 1940, Max [age 50] and his wife Freda [age 52] were living at the home that they owned on Blanchard St. that they were also living in during the 1930 U.S. Census. Living with them were two "Lodgers", Rose Brodin [age 48] and Jack Goldberg [age 21]. Max was again listed as having a 3rd Grade education, was the Proprietor of a Retail Grocery store, and had worked 52 weeks in 1939 and 72 hours in the week prior to the Census. Clearly Max worked hard in supporting his family for many years, and grew his grocery store, which was later called Foods Co. Stores into one of the leading independent chain in Southern California with 16 locations.
In 1955, Max Schwartz, Abe Schwartz and Ben Schwartz were listed as "co-partners" of Foods Co. in legal documents [Records and Briefs of the United States Supreme Court, October Term 1955] in a suit of many grocery chains in California against the Retail Clerks Union Local 770. Foods Co. would continue to grow and prosper under the leadership of Max and his sons Abe and Ben during the 1950's, 1960's and into the 1970's. Max lost his second wife Freidaon 18 October 1961 when she passed away in Los Angeles County. He would marry a third time on 15 December 1963 in Los Angeles County to Estelle Melnick, who had also immigrated from Russia.
Max Schwartz passed away on 21 June 1971 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles County, California. His sons Abe and Ben would continue to run and operate Foods Co. markets for another 16 years until it was sold in 1987.
