Mavis Myrtle Smyth, often known as Maisie, was the second daughter born to Albert Cann Smyth and Alethia Jane Hood. She was 16 when her father died from a cancer and she left home to become a governess to a farming family in the western Victorian town of Lillimur near Kaniva. Mavis met Edward Harry (Ted) in 1938 because he had an American accent. She told the story of waiting to meet Ted one evening with a friend on a jetty in Adelaide. The friend asked if the man approaching was Ted and Maisie replied "that if he stopped and patted the dog nearby, it was" - sure enough, the approaching man did pat the dog. Mavis was a mature woman (31) when she married and then bore two sons to Edward Harry Hurn. Edward and Mavis and their two sons moved around Victoria and South Australia quite a bit to seek work in Edward's profession of a construction rigger. |
