Facts and Events
Maurice James NAUGHTON joined the Federal Customs Department at Port Adelaide on 15-Oct-1896. In 1913, he was transferred to the tariff branch of the Central Office of the Department in Melbourne, and ultimately filled the position of the officer in charge of that branch. At the end of 1925, he was appointed senior inspector in Queensland, Australia. Early in 1929, Mr NAUGHTON was sent to Canberra to undertake special work in connection withthe tariff. At the end of that year, he took up the duties of senior inspector, N.S.W., and for the next year or two was occupied either at Canberra on special duties or at the Sydey Customs House. Maurice was sent to Brisbane, Queesland, to act as Collector during the temporary absence of the Collector, Mr CURD, and while there was appointed Sub-Collector, N.S.W., and later Collector, W.A. After leaving Queensland, he was appointed Collector of Customs for S.A., and his engaging manner, coupled with a thorough understanding of the duties associated with his office, resulted in the business community having every confidence in him. Until his appointment in W.A., Maurice was an enthusiastic member of the C.P.S.C.A., and had rendered material assistance and given much useful advice to Branch and Executive Officers of the Association.
