Maud Kempson was born on 13th July 1889 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Sarah Ann Kempson, formerly Smith, and her husband James Kempson, a bricklayer and plait bleacher. The 1891 census finds Maud living with her mother and siblings at Chobham Street in Luton. Her father was not at home on census night; he was in St Albans Gaol (he was convicted of poaching and related offences many times). By 1901 the family had moved a short distance to Essex Street.
On 30th April 1910, aged 20, Maud married an engineer fitter named James Frederick Wright, who was from the nearby village of Markyate. The 1911 census finds them living at 71 Harcourt Street in Luton. Maud and James appear to have gone on to have two sons, in 1911 and 1915. Maud's father died in 1915, and her mother in 1919.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Maud and James were living at 28 Montrose Avenue in Luton.
James died in 1974, aged 86. Maud outlived him by just over three years, dying in 1978, aged 88.
