James Frederick Wright was born on 15th February 1888 at Markyate, which at that time straddled several parishes and the two counties of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire; James was born in the part of the village which came under Flamstead parish in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Lydia Wright, formerly Fox, and her husband James Wright, a publican. The 1891 census finds James living with his parents and siblings at the Plume of Feathers public house on London Road in Markyate. The family was still living on London Road in Markyate ten years later in the 1901 census.
On 30th April 1910, aged 22, he married Maud Kempson in the nearby town of Luton. He married as "Frederick James", suggesting he may have been known by his middle name. They appear together in the 1911 census living at 71 Harcourt Street in Luton, with James working as an engineer fitter. They appear to have gone on to have two sons, in 1911 and 1915.
At the outbreak of the Second World War James (listed as Frederick J.) and Maud were living at 28 Montrose Avenue in Luton, and he was working as an engineer's turner. James was to live at 28 Montrose Avenue for the rest of his life.
James died on 1st September 1974, aged 86. Maud outlived him by three years.

The fact that James' birth was registered in Hemel Hempstead district rather than Luton suggests he must have been born in the part of Markyate which was in the parish of Flamstead - which is consistent with the London Road address for the family quoted on his baptism. All the other parishes which included parts of Markyate were in the Luton district.
