Often known as Matt or Matthew.

Matthew was required to change the spelling of his surname from Scheurer to Schurer when he began work for the railways. It is not known why this was required, but some family members thought that it may have something to do with the name being of German origin. Although his brother also joined the railways only 2 weeks later, he was not required to change his name. Matthew's descendants kept the new spelling. However, Matthew's surname was registered as "Schurer" at the time of his birth, so it may have just been that the railways insisted on staying with the spelling on this document.
