“Grandpap (Matthew Bernard Thomas) was born in Johnson City, TN on July 8, 1887 and was registered in 1889. His mom, Kate died in childbirth and his dad, Joe Thomas died in a mining accident when grandpap was 4 years old and his older sister, Edna, died from scarlet fever.  He was taken in by a neighbor lady who gave him to a traveling salesman at the age of 12.  He ended up in Virginia on his own and worked on the railroad. Not sure how he got to PA but he helped build the Montour Railroad.  He died on September 21, 1986.”
