Sinclair of Stevenson, now of Murkle.
The immediate ancestor of this family was,
Matthew Sinclair of Longformacus, the ninth generation of that family in a direct male line. He lived in the reigns of Queen Mary and King James VI. And married Elisabeth, daughter of John Swinton of that ilk, by Margaret his wife, daughter of David Home of Wedderburn, Esq; and by her had two sons.
1. Robert, his successor, who carried on the line of the house of Longformacus.
2. George, the first of the line of the house of Stevenson.

Continued issue with Elisabeth Swinton two more sons:
3. Thomas, who died before the year 1622, which appears by a charter of confirmation under the great seal, quond. Thoma Sinclair, filio quond. Matthei Sinclair de Longformacus, terrarium de Overbulduster, etc. dated the last day of February 1622.
4. James, who married Elisabeth Home, and got a charter under the great seal, Jacobo Sinclair, fratri germano Roberti Sinclair de Longformacus, et Elisabetha Home ejus sponsa, terrarium de West-Borthwick in vicecom. De Berwick, etc. dated 2nd January 1609; but we can give no account of his posterity.
Matthew died anno 1603, and was succeeded at Longformacus by his eldest son Robert X.
