Matthew Cluer was baptised on 7th September 1796 at East Lavant in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Lavant.

On 10th November 1823, aged 27, Matthew married Sarah Edwards at Mid Lavant. Their first son was baptised the following year in East Lavant, after which they moved to West Stoke, where they settled, having another six children baptised there between 1826 and 1836.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find Matthew living with Sarah and their children in West Stoke. Matthew worked as an agricultural labourer.

Sarah died in 1860, aged 66. Matthew survived her by over ten years. He appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living with his eldest son William and his family at West Stoke.

Matthew died at the age of 74. He was buried at West Stoke on 6th May 1871.

    Baptisms Anno 1796 / Mathew Son of Eliz[abeth] Clewer (illegitimate) Bapt[ise]d 7th Sept[embe]r

This baptism has been linked to the Matthew Cluer who married Sarah Edwards on the basis that it it in the parish Matthew gave as his birthplace and at about the right time, and no evidence has been found to suggest the Matthew Clewer baptised in 1796 died young or married anyone else.
