Allen Family and Descendants of Latimerstown, Wexford, Ireland [1663-1900] -
Notes for Dr. Matthew Johnson ALLEN:
Matthew graduated from the University of Maryland in 1820.
His will was probated 25 Jun 1856 in Lean Co., Florida and from this it is obvious that he was a doctor. He asked to be buried with his parents in Spesutia and left his estate to his niece Adeline B. Allen and his nephews John D.? Allen and Henry S.? Allen. This estate included land in Madson Co., Jackson State, Florida, except for 450 acres which he left to his nephew Robert G. Allen.
He also left his gold watch to John D. Allen, his silver watch to Edward M. Allen and his medical library to John D. Allen. His personal effects were left to his sister Adeline G. Greme. (Harford Co. Wills, CWB-7-132, CR 95-1, p.142 at Maryland State Archives)
Matthew's inscription on his parents' tombstone reads: "Through his faith in his blessed Redeemer, he was enabled to meet Death in a strange land with calmness and resignation." Of course, Florida was not part of the United States at this time.
