Will Transcript
- In the name of God Amen. I Matthew Alexander of Sumner County & State of Tennessee being weak in body but of sound & perfect mind & memory do make and publish this my last Will & Testament in manner and form following. viz:
- First: I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Alexander one Negro woman named Esther to her own disposal forever also all my household & kitchen furniture in like manner also two cows & calves & the half of my stock of sheep.
- Secondly: I give & bequeath unto my son James Alexander and his heirs forever my plantation on which he now lives & one cow & calf.
- Thirdly: I give unto my son Stephen Alexander & his heirs forever fifty dollars.
- Fourthly: I give unto my son Edwin Alexander & his heirs forever fifty dollars.
- Fifthly: I give unto my son David Alexander & his heirs forever the tract of land on which I now live & one Negro fellow named Sam likewise my wagon & all my plantation tools.
- Sixthly: I give unto my daughter Prudence Snoddy & her heirs forever fifty dollars.
- Seventhly: It is my will & desire that all the property I may die possessed of not herein mentioned shall be sold at my death & the money arising there from shall be equally divided among all my children.
- It is further my will & desire that my son David shall comfortably maintain & support his Mother in any way she shall chose during her lifetime and lastly it is my will and desire that my wife Elizabeth & my son David be & I do hereby appoint them Executrix & Executor to this my last Will & Testament. This 5th Sept. 1823.

- Signed sealed published & delivered in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of the Testator:

- State of Tennessee - Sumner County Court November Term 1823 - The last Will & Testament of Matthew Alexander dec'd was exhibited in open Court for probate & thereupon duly proved by the oaths of Samuel H. Lewis & James Wilson subscribing witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded & thereupon David Alexander one of the Executors named in said last will appeared in Court & took the oath of Executor prescribed by law & together with Stephen Wilson & Robert Laurence his securities entered into & acknowledged their bond to the Governor in the sum of five thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs.
