Probably arrived as an indentured servant. First appears in 1730 (as "Matthew Gastinew") in household of Joseph Cottman. In 1735, he was in the household of John Hovington. By 1736, he apparently had his own household, which included Joseph Allphew.
His will names no heirs (i.e., no surviving children . . . ?), but names his younger brother, George Lewis, as executor. (Probably the only other family member in the country.)
