Family tree▼ Facts and Events
Birth: 1697 Sussex County Delaware, USA Death: Jun. 22, 1783 Guilford County North Carolina, USA Son of Matthew Osborne I (Norse Ozbun) of England who immigrated to America in 1661 and settled in Pennsylvania for a few years before moving to Delaware where some of his children were born. Mathew Jr. married Isabell Dobson Oct.16,1723 in Duck Creek Monthly Meeting,Quaker Friends Church in Sussex Co.Delaware. Then went south to Virginia before moving on to Centre,Rowan Co.,North Carolina, which was largely a Quaker settlement. He owned a blacksmith shop and owned a shop that manufactured wood and steel articles and was a gun smith. Since Matthew and family had to walk about 18 miles to Monthly Meetings and were meeting in private homes he and several friends felt that a church was needed for their little community. Matthew along with four friends secured title to a tract of seven acres of land and were granted a Meeting for worship in 1757 and built their first meeting house in 1763. The Monthly Meeting was established in 1772. Since the location was half way between Cane Creek and New Garden it seemed only natural that the name of "Center"(Centre") be chosen. It was a log struture twenty feet square with a dirt floor and a rock fireplace and chimney in one end. It was uned until 1780 and a stone marker, erected at its site in 1928, carries an engraved picture of the building. Among the recorded names of charter members of Centre Monthly Meeting Church are those of MATHEW OSBORN and son Thomas Osborn.
