RUSH CREEK TOWNSHIP. - 697 Matthew Mitchell, Sr., was a native of Eastern Pennsylvania; a Revolutionary soldier under Gen. George Washington, and after the war moved to the forks of Youghiogheny River, from there to Beaver Co., Pa., and from thence to Muskingum Co., O., where he died at the age of 82 years, and was buried in the cemetery at the village of Concord, in that county. Matthew Mitchell, Jr., was his son, who came to Youghiogheny with his father, and where he married Miss Elizabeth Wylie, daughter of Samuel Wylie. http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Logan/LoganRushCreek.htm

His father was possibly John Mitchel who came to America after the birth of Mathew. John Mitchel lived in Rostraver Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA until about 1786. His will was proven in 1787.

    Mathew Mitchell - born 1743 - Died in the month of May 1823 aged 80 years. He was bron in Cumberland Co., Penn. {Note: she doesn't agree with Ann Hoverstock on this information}

    Mary Richey his wife - born 1738 in Co. Derry Ireland. Died on the 30th day of August 1822 in the 84th yr. of her age.

    These had two children whose descendants I and you know of many of them. {Note: most of the language is transposed as she said it.}

    William - was the father of Dr. Wm. Mitchell - of Mathew and Mary Ann Rodger's cos. J.C.'s wife.

    Those whom I know of John Mitchell's children were Ann (Mitchell) Sterrett, Nancy (Mitchell) Turnbull, Eliza (Mitchell) Davidson and Mary Mitchell.

    There were Mathew - John - Levi - Patric or Patterson. They called him Uncle Pat. There were two other brothers and a sister that I cannot recall the names.

    There were some who died in childhood and early life - there were 12 or 14 of these brothers and sisters.

    You know of your grandmother's family and also know of the Turnbull family. Children and names are or were John M - Ann Elizabeth (Turnbull) Paine. Sarah Isabel (Turnbull) Weede - who died some twenty years ago. Mary Adeline (Turnbull) Crawford lives in Colorado. Nancy Jane (Turnbull) Hill who died nearly ten years ago in Allegheny City, PA. William W. Turnbull - was killed in the war - and Blanche T was his only child. David Alexander Turnbull you know and also his family. Thomas Beveridge Turnbull - a minister and for some years has been at Argyle, NY.

    John Mitchell was the husband of Mrs. Adaline Mitchell - who now lives & has for years in Kirkwood Ill and is up in the 80 - perhaps 84. Her children your father can name better than I can - Laura, Rufus, and Collie the youngest. Both daughters dead for many years. There are three sons living.

    Mrs. Davidson has some three children, perhaps four. Levi Mitchell had several. The first wife (who was a sister of Mrs. Adaline Mitchell of Kirkwood) had three children - two sons and a daughter - the second wife - a Smiley - had several children - one of whom lives at Roseville {Illinois}- is a physician - and married Kate (Cunningham) Rodgers. (William M. Rodgers' first wife.)

    Mathey Mitchell had some half dozen children - but I do not know where any of these live.

    William Mitchell brother of John Mitchell - both sons of Mathew Mitchell and Mary (Richey) Mitchell - was the father of Mathew - Nancy - Robert - William - David - John - Mary Ann - Jane and James - and it seems to me there was another child that died quite young. These all came of Ill. and lives here - but Jane and David. James died I think a soldier in the Mexican War.

    John married Rachel (Rodgers) in the winter of 44 & 45 and died in 1851. Dr. John A. Mitchell their son is a practicing physician in Kansas City - and a Prof. in a medical college there. His mother is now Rachel Foster and is living with her only child in Kansas City.

    David Mitchell went South for his health - lived there some years, married and during the war. Died some years after the war.

    Robert first married Rachel Townsley who died in 1851 of cholera - and left William - Margaret Jane (Mitchell) Wilson and Minerva (Mitchell) Young. He married second, third, and fourth times. His second wife left him one child - John P. Mitchell who lives in Grand Junction Colorado.

    Mr. Williams' wife's given name was Mary and they had children - John who died in the Civil War and Emma (Mitchell) Herdmann living in Monmouth {Illinois}. There there were other children - George - William - Charles - Horace. All these but the last named are still living.

    Mathew marriedi n Ohio about 1839 - had numerous family - of those I know are Nancy, John, William, Mary Sykes and Jennie.

    Mary Ann (Mitchell) Rodgers - wife of J.C. Rodgers - had many children - Ann Mitchell - Rachel Isabel - Clara Jane - (Nash) - John Ariel - Mary Parthenia and three died in infancy.

    I can trace your line back several generations: 1. Freeman Rodgers
    Your mother: 2. Nancy Ann (Sterrett) Rodgers
    Grandmother: 3. Ann (Mitchell) Sterrett
    G-grdfthr: 4. John Mitchell
    Gg-Grdfr: 5. Matthew Mitchell
    G-g-g Grdfr: 6. Was doubtless one of three Mitchells who lived in Cumberland Co, PA during the years 1751-53. Names were John, George, James but have been unable to trace which one of these.

    These families of Mitchells who once lived in Cumberland Co, PA have now connected with many others and I will mention many that I can recall. I cannot name nor know many of the vast number:

    Dr. D.A. Wallace's wife and children
    Rev. G.D. Henderson's wife and children
    Rev. Oburns wife and children
    James Campbell's wife and children - he is of San Jose, CA
    The Acheson Family
    James Findley and children of Kirkwood {Illinois}
    Samuel Findley and children
    David Findley and children
    James Herdman's wife and children
    All the Mitchell name known as is
    John Paine's wife and children
    Joseph Young's wife and children
    Mrs. (Thompson), sister of Mrs. D.A. Wallace - and daughter's children whose father is E.A. Lord.
    Nannie (Turnbull) Hill's children

    Still farther back are the Richeys and those bring in the Campbells and Reynolds - a large connection between all these. So doubtless if you knew varying streams of kindred coming down from your g-g-grandparents and all their descendants - then get to the Rodgers - back a half dozen generation with all their descendants - and the Davidsons and Sterretts you would find almost enough of kindred to make a state. When you go baco to g-g-grandparents - and there was been 16 of those g-g-grandparents of yours then living - and for Ida's children - there were then existing 32 ggg-grandparents.

    ....
    Will be glad to hear from you when you are pleased to write. I thought I would write this up for you and ___________. I wrote for John Herdman and you and he all that yet have a copy.
