Mary Whitford, daughter of the Rev. Oscar U., and Euphemia Allen Whitford, was born Nov. 9, 1873, at Farina, Ill., where her father was pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist church. During her childhood and girlhood years the home was for a time successively in Walworth, Wis., in Chicago, Ill., Westerly, R. I., a short time here in Milton, and then back to Westerly.
She was graduated from Milton College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts with the class of 1896, attended for one year the Rhode Island state normal school, taught for three years in the public schools of Westerly, R. I., and then on August 15, 1900, was married to Alfred E. Whitford. For one year they lived in Chicago where Mr. Whitford was doing post-graduate work, and then in 1901 a home was established in Milton where it remained until six years ago, since when two years were spent at Madison, Wis., and the last four years at Alfred, N. Y., where Mr. Whitford is Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and professor of mathematics in Alfred University. There are two children, Albert and Dorothy, Mrs. Nes Lerdahl, both of Madison, Wis. There is one grandchild, Esther Mae Lerdahl. One brother, Allen Whitford, lives in Westerly, R. I.
Mrs. Whitford had many intimate friends wherever she lived. She was interested and active in all good works, especially those connected with her church and college. She was a skillful pianist. Neighborliness and hospitality were among her many virtues. She was suddenly stricken and passed away after an illness of only three days in her home in Alfred, November 17.
Services were held at Alfred on Friday, November 20, and the body was brought to Milton for burial in the Whitford lot. Farewell services were held here in the Seventh Day Baptist church on Sunday afternoon November 22, conducted by the Rev. Carroll L. Hill, assisted by the Rev. Edwin Shaw. The church choir rendered an anthem. There was an abundance of floral offerings. The service was largely attended, many coming from out of town. The bearers were Louis A. Babcock, Lester M. Babcock, Harry B. Crandall, George M. Ellis, D. Nelson Inglis, and Walter Rogers.
