Research Notes
- Note: Parents and maiden surname are unproven at this time.
- Theory A: Parents = Miles and Susannah Gorham. Source = Holtzclaw 1 who states that their daughter, Mary Gorham, was a ward of Henry and Elizabeth Wharton. He believes that Mary may have wished to honor her guardians by using the name Wharton when naming the eldest son of Edward Ransdell.
- Evidence Against: Ransdell 2 states, "The supposition that Wharton's mother was Mary Gorham, repeated as fact by some writers, is not tenable" based on an estimated birth year for Wharton of 1685.
- Status: More research needed.
