- It has been speculated that Mary may have been related to Peregrine Bertie, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby - being either his daughter or granddaughter. Family tradition holds that Mary's husband's grandfather, George Smith, worked as a tenant farmer for Baron Willoughby and that after George Smith died, Baron Willoughby took care of John Smith who was George's son and Mary's future father-in-law.
