Information from Internment.Net MaryEllen McTucker, 90, of Redding, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Because she was a Women's Army Corps member, she received a full military funeral with a 21-gun salute, on Jan. 29, 2007, at Northern California Veterans' Cemetery in Igo, Calif. MaryEllen was born to Irene and Wilbur Berkebile on Nov. 10, 1916, in Somerset, Pa. After becoming one of the first women to enlist in the WACS during World War II, McTucker traveled from training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, to Daytona Beach, Fla. She had a wonderful contralto singing and speaking voice, and used it to good effect. The troops were training on the beach one day, when they were ordered to march toward the water. They were about to march right in, when her commanding officer ordered the troops to turn. But no one heard her, so the commanding officer ordered Mom to give the order. Mom boomed, "Halt! About face! Hut 2-3-4!" and turned the troops. She became a drill sergeant after that. MaryEllen met her husband, Sgt. Nat J. McTucker Sr., of the U.S. Army, in Cairo, Egypt, during the war. They lived in Dixon for several years before moving to Redding in 1954. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Redding for 13 years. She grew up poor in the coal-mining country of Pennsylvania, and also witnessed the bombing in Italy, but life's events didn't change her. She was boisterous and outgoing and compassionate. She enjoyed life to the fullest and loved her six children immensely. She also enjoyed playing bingo with her many friends, and giving freely to charitable causes, including the Humane Society and organizations for Third World children. She was a member of the Veterans Administration in Redding, and an active senior citizen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nat J. McTucker. Survivors include sons, Ron (Phyllis) Miller of Tampa, Fla., and Nat (Michelle) and Niles, both of Redding; daughter Mariss of Dixon, Laurinda McTucker and Natalie (Robert) Read, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
