With regard to the parentage of Mary (or another wife), "John A. Bolles, genealogist of the Bolles family... conjectures that Joseph Bolles married a daughter of Morgan Howell, who owned land at Cape Porpoise, and who devised and bequeathed to Mrs. Bolles and her children all his estate and property, and appointed her executrix of his will November 12, 1666."S1 Douglas Richardson in 2013 stated this as a certainty.S2

    Joseph Bowles bp 19 Feb 1656 at Worksop, Nottinghamshire who arrived in New England 1640 settled at Winter Harbor, Maine. He was apprentice at Kingston-upon-Hull. Joseph Bolles married Mary Howell. Children: Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, Mary (m Charles Frost), Hannah (m Caleb Becke and Nathaniel Wright), Elizabeth (m Philip Locke and William Pitman), Sarah (m Humphrey Chadbourne) and Mercy. Returned twice to England. He was legatee in 1665 in the will of his brother John Bolles of St. James, Clekenwell in 1665. Will dated 18 Sep 1678 at Wells. Widow mary living 25 Feb 1690/1 at Portsmouth.
