A comment in the St Patricks Catholic Church register says she "led an irregular life", was negligent in receiving the sacraments, but summoned the priest to her deathbed.

Did Mary die in childbirth given that her youngest daughter was born in the same year as her death? Who was the father of Edith, Mary's last daughter? Did he help to bring up the other kids from her marriage to Edmund Douglas who had died 3 yrs earlier? Consider that he died in England. So she was left alone in South Africa in 1867 with a young family of 5 kids.
