ch. 25 Nov 1807, St Maurice, Winchester: Mary Ann daughter of Mary Palmer

The ages given for Mary Ann vary markedly. In most censuses she gave ages suggesting that she was born around 1815-1817 or so, making her a similar age to her husband or just a year or two older. In the 1881 census however, she gave an age suggesting she was born around 1807, making her ten years older than her husband. When she died her death certificate says she was 65 (implying born around 1717), but an obituary in the local newspaper says she was 76 (implying born around 1806). Mary Ann had a brother called William, who was living with her as an adult in the 1841 census, whilst William's daughter Eliza later came to live with Mary Ann and her husband, described as their niece. The most plausible baptism found for William would appear to be for a William Strickland son of Mary Palmer at Winchester St Maurice in 1806. If that is him, this baptism for Mary Ann daughter of Mary Palmer could well be the Mary Ann who later called herself Mary Ann Strickland.
