    About Mary Anderson Dingess

Giles County Historical Society 1810 Giles Co. Census Page: #386

    ---------------------------------

    Birth: 1750 Death: 1828

Mary " Polly" Anderson Smith was born Abt. 1750 in Augusta (later Rockingham) Co., Virginia. She died Aft. 1835 in Giles County, Virginia. She married Johan Peter Dingess in 1769 in Augusta County, Virginia, son of Michael Dingess and Gertrude. He was born 04 Dec 1738 in Mittlebaugh, near Mainz, Germany, and died Bet. Jun - Nov 1809 in Giles County, Virginia (later Oakvale, Mercer County, W.VA).

There are some descendants who identify Mary's family name as Anderson and that her father was William Anderson. There are indications that Anderson must be a family name since two of their sons had Anderson as a middle name. However, the evidence submitted to the DAR and verified by their genealogist is that Mary was a Smith and she was the daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Dunbar Smith.
