James's mother was Margaret Smith Bright, the daughter of Phoebe Dunbar Smith Anderson and Thomas S. Smith. Phoebe married William Anderson after the death of Thomas Smith. Margaret had a sister, Polly Smith , who married Peter Dingess, and a brother, Capt John Smith, who was one of the original settlers of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Capt Smith was one of James Harrod's men.
