Early Life

Mary Sherrat was born in 1799, the second daughter of Robert Sherrat, who was overseer of the Farquharson estate at Finzean. The family lived in the estate house with Mary's maternal aunt Christian and cousin Archibald Farquharson, the 6-year-old laird of Finzean. Sometime between 1808 and 1812, when the laird reached majority, the Sherrat family moved out of the estate house to the nearby Tillyfruskie farm. They lived there until 1818, when Mary's father died. Around that time, Mary seems to have moved up to Lumphanan.

Marriage to Robert Cromar

Mary married Robert CROMAR on 15 Jun 1823 in Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire.1 (Robert CROMAR was christened on 15 Apr 1798 in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire

Marriage to James Shaw

Mary next married James SHAW on 13 Jul 1830 in Burnside, Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire.1 (James SHAW was born in 1793 and died before 1852.

Later Life

After her husband died, she moved in with her daughter Christian Shaw / Gordon, in Dorsincully, Glenmuick. That is where Mary Sherrat died at the age of 72. She seems to be buried in the parish church in Lumphanan (near where she lived most of her married life), possibly with her husband, but the inscription on the stone is quite worn.
