- ↑ The will of William Sheffield of Sherborn [Middlesex Probate 20255], dated 14 Oct 1698, names wife Mary, and seven daughters, listing "Mary Sheffeild ye wiff of John Clark" first, then Han[n]ah, Martha, Thamazin Adams, Susan[n]a, Elizabeth, and Rachil's children. Rachel is clearly out of order due to being deceased, but it would be typical that Mary might be the first name used for a daughter. Since the marriage date is unknown, it seems likely Mary was born before Rachel, i.e., about 1658.
- Source:Jameson, Ephraim Orcutt. Biographical Sketches of Prominent Persons, and the Genealogical Records of Many Early and Other Families in Medway, Mass.,, p. 131, names Mary's parents as William Sheffield and Hannah Bullard. Given the marriage of this couple in 1692, and the will cited above, this is clearly incorrect.
