Mary Ann Sharpe was baptised on 2nd October 1814 at St Ippolyts in Hertfordshire, daughter of a labourer called Samuel Sharpe and his wife Sarah. The family lived at Thistley Farm near the hamlet of Gosmore.

Mary Ann was married on 9th October 1831, aged 17, to John Stokes, an agricultural labourer. They went on to have six children together between 1832 and 1842, although their first child died as a baby. They moved around within the St Ippolyts area, with the children's baptisms recording the family at Gosmore in 1832 and 1833, Almshoe Wood Farm in 1835, Hitchin in 1838 and St Ippolyts in 1840. The 1841 census finds the family living at Ash Brook, half a mile north-east of St Ippolyts village, on the main road from Hitchin to Stevenage.

Mary Ann died at the age of 29. She was buried at St Ippolyts on 9th May 1844. John survived her by nearly 49 years and would remarry in 1846.
