Hannah Stokes was baptised on 26th April 1840 at St Ippolyts in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Ann Stokes, formerly Sharpe, and her husband John Stokes, a labourer. The 1841 census finds Hannah living with her parents and siblings at Ash Brook in St Ippolyts parish, a hamlet lying on the main road between Hitchin and Stevenage.

In 1844, when Hannah was four years old, her mother Mary Ann died. Just over two years later Hannah's father John married again, with a widow named Hannah Pateman becoming Hannah's stepmother. The 1851 census finds Hannah lodging with the family of her aunt, Ann Worbey, who was her father's older sister. The Worbeys lived at The Riddy in Hitchin, not far from Ash Brook. Hannah was by this time working as a straw plaiter. She has yet to be researched after 1851.
